The future of homecare

It seems I cannot go into any type of facility these days without hearing about staffing shortages; be it a hospital, rehab, assisted-living, or long-term care facility, all seem to be short-staffed.  If it's this bad now what is it going to be like in 5 to 10 years, we are just at the beginning of that baby-boomer surge that will be needing care, in just a few short years I can't imagine what the demand will be like and the challenges my industry will face in meeting that demand.  The time to prepare is now, get LTC insurance - I am frequently asked if Medicare pays for our services and no they do not.  Some folks think our services are covered by their health insurance, again that is not the case.  Long-term care insurance is generally a stand-alone policy and while the policies offered today are not nearly as generous as policies written 20 years ago, they will be of some help.  Basic economics of supply and demand - as demand continues to increase for our services we will need to pay higher wages to attract and retain caregivers.  For those who want to remain in their home as long as possible - in home care can get very expensive.  Plan ahead and be good to your children.
