During the 80's, Jeffrey Johnson was the Director of Social Work in a Baltimore, Maryland nursing home. In his work, he heard frequent complaints from families about the limited options for loved ones who require elder care. Jeffrey became determined to make homebound elder care more widely available.
During the early 90's, Jeffrey started a private duty non-medical home care agency called "The Senior Care Group, Inc." Since then, the home care agency has become well-regarded in the Baltimore, Maryland area.
The Birth of Visiting Angels
In the late 90's, on the heels of his success with "The Senior Care Group, Inc.," Jeffrey joined up with three other directors to start Visiting Angels, a nationwide network of elder care agencies.
Visiting Angels has always prided itself on providing the best possible elder care to seniors living in New Jersey. In addition to offering the best care to seniors, we also offer expert training and respect to our staff, which in turn benefits the seniors in our care. These are the components which have led Visiting Angels to be dubbed "America's Choice in Homecare."
New Jersey's Growing Elderly Population
By the year 2000, there were nearly 1, 500,000 seniors living in New Jersey. That is a 3.5 percent increase from 1990. And, by 2020, that number will have significantly grown. So it reasonable to say that New Jersey has one of fastest growing elderly populations.
What Led You to Look for Elder Care in New Jersey for Your Loved Ones?
My wife's parents have always been a big presence in our lives. Which is great. Not to mention our kids adore them. About once a year, the whole family would drive to the New Jersey shore to spend a week just relaxing by the ocean with our feet in the sand. My wife's father helped the kids build sandcastles, and her mom read novels under the shade of an umbrella. It was, for everyone, the highlight of the year.
For a long time, this escape to the shore was a tradition in our family. That is, until my wife's father had a mild heart attack a couple years back. After that, he started moving slower; needed more rest. Soon, trips to the shore were too hard on him. It was difficult for everyone to watch this decline, and all we wanted was to be able to help him. Unfortunately, he required the sort of attention that neither I nor my wife could offer; so it was time to consider options.
Now, he is receiving in-home elder care, and he is doing so
well. It turned out to be the best way to go. Everyone is relieved. My wife sleeps well knowing her father is in good hands. My kids are happy because they get to keep enjoying their grand-pop. And grand-pop is thankful to be enjoying the quality of life that he deserves.
