Owen Beach in Tacoma, WA

If your family wants to stay close to home, Tacoma’s Owen Beach on the Puget Sound is a perfect day trip. Nestled inside Point Defiance Park, the beach offers kayak rentals, walking trails, and a promenade along the shore with beautiful views of the water and Mount Rainier. While you’re in the area, stop by the accessibility-friendly Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium to check out the American Red Wolves, sharks, tigers, polar bears, and more. 

Bremerton, WA

Distance from Tacoma: 40 minutes 

Bremerton is an ideal getaway for history bluffs. Veterans will appreciate the U.S. Naval Destroyer Museum and Puget Sound Navy Museum, as well as viewing the USS Turner Joy, which is docked at the Bremerton public pier. Snohomish County, WA

Distance from Tacoma: 1 hour and 20 minutes 

Located in Western Washington, Snohomish is full of opportunities for family fun. Enjoy blueberry picking at Mountainview Blueberry Farm, go antiquing or grab lunch in historic downtown Snohomish, and end the day by warming up at the public fire pits in serene Mukilteo Lighthouse Park. 

Mount Rainier National Park

Distance from Tacoma: 1 hour and 20 minutes 

Adventurous seniors will enjoy the tranquil beauty of Mount Rainier National Park. Take a family bike ride, do some hiking, and have a scenic picnic in the Sunrise area, among the abundant wildflowers. For those with limited mobility, Mount Rainier is incredibly car-friendly. You can drive in through the Paradise entrance, which is open year round to vehicles. If your family is interested in staying overnight, the park has two lodging options, along with several restaurants and a general store.
