COOKEVILLE -- With the elderly population rapidly increasing, the need for senior care is growing, too. Now, more help is available in Cookeville and the surrounding areas for those with senior family members with the opening of Visiting Angels.
Visiting Angels is one of the nation's fastest growing providers of assisted living services for seniors and now has a new office at 723 W. Jackson Street in Cookeville.
Locally owned and operated by Charlotte Suggs-Nabors, Visiting Angels provides non-medical senior home care to help senior citizens to continue to live in their homes.
"It's all about building lasting relationships and having a passion to care about the needs of those we serve," Suggs-Nabors said. "We want to make a difference in the lives of the families that we serve."
Suggs-Nabors, a lifelong resident of Putnam County, is a 30 year veteran banker and former regional bank president. She learned about Visiting Angels while exploring opportunities to open her own business. Her research showed that a rapidly aging population, combined with the rising costs of nursing home care and depleted retirement funds, has created an urgent need for in-home elderly care.
"The elderly is the fastest growing segment of the American population," she said. "Those who were born from 1946-1964, known as our 'Baby Boomers,' will move into the 65+ age segment in 2011. The older population in 2030 is projected to be twice as large as it was in 2006, growing from 35 million to 71.5 million in the US alone.
"At the same time, working families have less time to spend caring for their aging parents, which has created a real crisis in America. Visiting Angels solves that problem by providing non-medical senior care to the home of either the elderly client or the family who cares for the parent. In that respect, we do serve as 'angels,' helping with light housekeeping, personal hygiene, medication reminders, meal preparation, shopping, joyful companionship and providing respite care for family caregivers and more."
Suggs-Nabors has assembled a management team of four, who have a combined 111 years experience, with a broad range of expertise from senior administration, human resources, accounting, health care industry sales, superior customer care and more.
Nationwide, there are over 400 Visiting Angels franchises and growing.
"We consider the home care industry a personal ministry," Suggs-Nabors said. "Our job is to lessen their burden and provide families with peace of mind and a way to let Mom and Dad continue to live in the home they have grown to love over the years."
The Visiting Angels staff is thoroughly screened, bonded, insured and available to provide clients with a few hours a week or up to 24-hour live-in care.
A ribbon-cutting celebration will be held Aug. 12 at 4 p.m. at the new office. Refreshments will be offered.
