The Visiting Angels Story

Local. Visiting Angels is owned and operated by Brent Wilson and Michael Hillman. We both grew up in Central Texas, and we are both Baylor University graduates. Our office staff and all of our caregivers are Visiting Angels employees we are accessible to you 24 hours a day to help with any special needs.

Understanding. Like many families, we both have experienced the effects of long-term illness and disability of our loved ones. For us, it began several years ago when Brent's grandmother, Nana, suffered a disabling stroke that left her paralyzed on the left side of her body. Making matters worse, her husband and primary caregiver, Brent's grandfather, died suddenly shortly thereafter. Nana is as sharp as ever, but she needs a lot of assistance with the activities of her daily living. After exploring nursing homes, assisted living facilities, unreliable private in-home care, and several variations of these, Nana decided on an assisted living facility. Brent's family helped her through the difficult decision to sell her home and move to a nice, but expensive, facility.

Our next crisis occurred when Brent's other grandmother, MeMe, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. As the disease progressed, MeMe became weaker and needed constant care and supervision. MeMe's family members were happy to provide for her, but as her disease progressed, she needed more and more care; eventually more than they could handle alone. Hospice helped but didn't provide the type of one-on-one assistance that she desperately needed in the final months of her life.

A final incident occurred when Michael's grandmother, Grammy, was involved in a serious church bus accident that left her with a shattered left elbow as well as a broken foot and numerous bruises and contusions. Witnessing the loving care provided during Grammy's recuperation in the comfort of Michael's parents' home helped establish the potential benefits of homecare in our minds as well as the qualities to look for in potential caregivers.

When these health-related situations developed, we and our families exhausted ourselves as caregivers before finally reaching out for help. But when we did look for help, we could not find exactly what we desired. What we did find and hire proved to be unreliable and unsatisfactory. We thought there had to be another alternative. This was the seed of an idea that started Visiting Angels, our home care service agency.

As we've studied the need for living assistance, we've learned that most families face similar situations from time to time - maybe you've been there already. Our population is aging, families are more dispersed, and there are fewer children able to care for their parents. Clearly, there is a growing demand for quality caregivers available to serve when needed. Visiting Angels could have really helped our families and relieved some of our stresses if we had only known about such an agency.

These real events in our lives provided the foundation of Visiting Angels to serve families in Central Texas. We care about and we understand these needs.
