Common Misconceptions About Seniors and Aging

Common Misconceptions About Seniors and Aging

A publication from the American Psychological Association (APA) shows that seniors are living longer than ever, with the current average life expectancy reaching 84.3 years for men and 86.6 for women. This is likely due to advancements in medical care, access to better nutrition, and a greater emphasis on a healthy lifestyle than our ancestors experienced. The influx of older individuals means that our perception of aging needs to shift to remove stigmas regarding physical, mental, and emotional health.

Debunking Myths About Older Adults

Despite these statistics, many people still hold on to outdated stereotypes and assumptions about seniors. Here are some common misconceptions about getting older, as well as the truth behind them.

Myth: Seniors Shouldn’t Exercise

Getting regular physical activity is actually of the utmost importance for older adults in order to maintain their strength, balance, and bone and muscle health. Seniors of all abilities can fit some form of exercise into their routine, whether it’s chair yoga or a walk around their neighborhood.

Myth: Most Seniors End Up Living in a Nursing Home

Many people assume that growing old means relinquishing your beloved independence. Fortunately, that’s usually not the case. The APA publication we mentioned above also shows that only about 5 percent of elderly people actually live in a nursing home, with others choosing to move in with family or remain aging at home with the assistance of a home care agency, like Visiting Angels

Myth: Seniors Have to Give Up Driving

Driving can become difficult for seniors because of changes that take place with age, such as slowed reaction time, visual impairments, and reduced mobility. However, that doesn’t mean they have to relinquish their keys the moment you turn 65- provided they’re still able to drive safely. According to the Federal Highway Administration, almost 1 in 5 drivers is a senior citizen.

Myth: It’s Normal for Seniors to Feel Lonely

Experiencing social isolation is not a “normal” consequence of aging. Seniors are able to live very full and active lives, in most cases. If you or your senior loved one is experiencing loneliness or depression, reach out to a trusted friend or family member, and talk to your doctor about strategies that will help you feel better.

Myth: Seniors Can’t Learn New Things

Although our cognitive abilities may decrease as we age, seniors are still quite capable of learning new skills. In fact, taking up a hobby can actually boost your brain health and memory. Older adults should try to stay as engaged and productive as possible, by volunteering, doing activities, and socializing with friends, both old and new.
