Summer Safety Tips for the Inactive Senior

Summer Safety Tips for the Inactive Senior

It often seems like July and August unleash every last bit of heat and humidity, causing temperatures to soar and seniors to head indoors. After all, staying inside when it’s too hot outside is often the wisest choice for older adults. However, even indoors, the heat and humidity threaten older adults if proper precautions aren’t taken. Seniors who aren’t as active are especially at risk for heat-related illnesses, even when they’re inside. Like the fable of the slowly boiled frog, seniors who are idle inside are often unaware of the dangers of the heat lurking in their own homes. As summer temperatures continue to climb, here are four summer safety tips for the inactive senior.

Monitor the Indoor Thermostat

As mentioned above, it’s dangerous for idle seniors to sit around in indoor temperatures that are too hot. Many seniors may not even realize that the indoor temperature is reaching a dangerous level. Their bodies adjust to the hotter temperatures as it slowly rises over the day. Help prevent the indoors from becoming too hot by programming your thermostat to kick on once the temperature has reached a certain degree. You don’t need to freeze inside, but you do need to keep your home somewhat cool. If you’re concerned about your aging loved one and their indoor temperature, consider installing a smart thermostat. You can monitor and help them regulate their thermostat, no matter how far you live away.

Talk with Your Doctor

Have a conversation with your doctor about the heat and your prescription medications. Some medication side effects increase sensitivity to the sun and heat. Ask about your medications and whether you need to take added precautions on hot days, such as avoiding the sun and heat altogether. Also, discuss the best location to store your medications. Some medications are affected by higher temperatures and may need to be stored somewhere cooler.

Stay Connected

It’s important for all seniors to stay connected to family or friends, no matter how active they are in the summer months. Inactive seniors especially benefit from having someone check in on them on hot days. Ask a trusted family member or friend to call you during the summer to ensure you are safe and well. If you do venture outdoors, get in the habit of calling a family member to let them know where you’re going, even if it’s out on the back patio. Call or text them once you’re inside. If you are a family member checking in on a loved one, ask them if they feel tired or dizzy, and remind them to drink water.

Drink More Water

Even if your plans involve staying indoors on hot days, staying hydrated is still very important. Dehydration is often the root of many heat-related illnesses. Seniors need to stay hydrated and even increase their water intake on hot, humid days. Start by drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning and before each meal, even if you’re not thirsty. Ask your doctor what an appropriate hydration goal looks like for you, as certain health conditions or medications may limit how much water you can consume.
