Top Four Benefits of Consuming Dairy in Older Adulthood

June welcomes the official arrival of summer. It also celebrates National Dairy Month. The origins of National Dairy Month began to promote dairy products in grocery stores. Today, it serves as a reminder of the amazing health benefits this food group has to offer.

Most adults often think of growing children when dairy products, such as milk or yogurt, are mentioned. However, dairy has much to offer older adults as well. Many essential nutrients vital for healthy aging can be found in this food group, providing older adults the perfect excuse to indulge in a glass of milk. If you’re still not convinced you need dairy, here are the top four benefits of consuming dairy in older adulthood.

Best Source of Calcium

Calcium is an essential nutrient in healthy aging as it fortifies bones and prevents osteoporosis. Sure, calcium can be found in non-dairy products, such as dark leafy vegetables or fish. Yet, dairy products remain the best source of calcium. To give you a comparison, a glass of milk contains about 300 mg of calcium, compared to the 70 mg found in a cup of broccoli. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends that older adults consume 1,200 mg of calcium a day.  Unfortunately, many older adults are missing the mark when it comes to consuming adequate calcium.

Excellent Source of Protein

In addition to being the best source of calcium, dairy products are also excellent sources of protein. Similar to not consuming adequate amounts of calcium, some older adults also aren’t consuming enough protein to support their aging bodies. Factors, such as protein being too difficult to chew or change in taste buds, can prevent some older adults from consuming usual sources of protein (e.g., nuts or meat). Dairy products are generally easier and tastier to consume. This makes dairy a great choice for older adults looking to increase their protein consumption.

Protects the Heart

Recent studies indicate that consuming the right kind of dairy may help older adults prevent heart disease. According to the study, eating fermented dairy products, such as yogurt and cheese, can reduce the risk of coronary artery disease, especially in older adult men, by up to 27 percent. The reduced risk is a result of consuming another essential nutrient found in dairy: potassium. Potassium may help to lower blood pressure. High blood pressure is often an undetected health threat for many older adults.

Decreases the Risk of Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes

A diet rich in high-fat dairy may help some older adults feel fuller, longer. Dairy satiates the appetite, meaning older adults are less inclined to overeat or overindulge in processed foods. Studies also show that the fatty acids found in dairy may help adults regulate their weight. Other studies point to the strong evidence that dairy products significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. It may seem ironic to consume high-fat dairy products to lose weight or reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes; however, nonfat or low-fat dairy products often contain added sugars. Consuming too much sugar contributes to weight gain and type 2 diabetes.
