4 Heart-Healthy Foods for Seniors

In honor of Heart Health Awareness Month, we at Visiting Angels are going to take a deep dive into an aspect of your health that directly relates to your heart: diet. Interested in giving your diet that heart-healthy boost? Read on to learn more about the foods that make your heart happy and how our at home senior care can help.

Berries

These yummy fruits are excellent sources of fiber, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Also, they’re rich in the antioxidant anthocyanins which help to reduce your risk for heart disease.  Whether you enjoy them as a delicious snack throughout the day, or a healthy dessert to tie your meal together, they’re packed with unique health benefits that make them worth their weight in gold and then some.

Spinach

Looking for a way to spice up your salads and sandwiches? Spinach, along with other leafy green vegetables such as kale and collard greens, contain loads of wonderful health bonuses. They’re an awesome source of vitamin K, which promotes proper blood clotting and protects your arteries. Spinach is also a great source of dietary magnesium as well which helps you maintain a healthy heart rhythm.

Tomatoes

Along with going great in a sandwich or salad, tomatoes also pack a punch, health-wise. They’re full of fiber, vitamin C, folate, potassium, and choline which are all wonderful for your heart. Studies have also shown that increasing potassium while decreasing sodium is one of the best choices that you can make when you’re attempting to lower your risk for heart disease.

Dark Chocolate

This may come as a surprise; but as long as you consume the dark chocolate in moderation, it can be wonderfully heart-healthy. Scientists have found that dark chocolate can protect against atherosclerosis, which is when plaque builds up in the arteries. This decreases your risk of heart attack and stroke.

It’s never too late to incorporate more heart-healthy elements into your diet. Let our caregivers help! We can create healthy meals using the foods above. Celebrate Heart Health Awareness Month with Visiting Angels by transforming your meals into heart-healthy masterpieces. Our at home senior care can help!
