At Visiting Angels of Auburn, NH, We Discuss Mental Health Awareness and Why it’s Critical for Caregivers to be Mindful of Warning Signs.
Mental Health Awareness is important for all age populations including our older population. Visiting Angels of Auburn, NH recently hosted a workshop in partnership with The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester. This workshop provided a great resource to increase one’s awareness of common concerns older adults are facing. It’s important to take notice of concerning behaviors, regardless of the person’s age. Early detection is key to being able to provide an individual with the necessary support and resources to maintain good mental health.
Common concerns in older adults include anxiety, depression, dementia, and self-medication among others. These concerns can arise later in one’s life, but can also be concerns an individual has throughout their entire life as humans typically deal with some level of anxiety and depression at various times.
Common symptoms we want to be aware of and look out for as Caregivers include unusual fatigue, losing interest in favorite activities, withdrawing from social activities, unexplained weight loss, changes in sleep habits - sleeping more or not being able to sleep, feelings of worthlessness, and suicidal thoughts or attempts. If you see any concerning behaviors, reach out for help—we don’t want to ignore any warning signs.
Some tips for caregivers, especially when working with the older population includes encouraging positive & engaging activities, promoting social interactions, staying calm, providing meals that are high in protein, listening, and encouraging.
