Local “Angels” Surprise Seniors with Mother’s Day Makeovers

Studies reveal new hairdo and fun on the town

(April 19, 2016) It’s the time of year to honor Mom for all her love, patience and guidance.  Despite the celebrations, Mother’s Day week can be difficult for elderly moms who are widowed and live alone, far away from children and grandchildren. This after a Harvard study found a new hairdo can improve health, lowering blood pressure. • The rate of cognitive decline was reduced by an average of 70 percent in seniors who frequently engaged in social activities.

1. Queen for the day: Surprise mom with a crown, flowers and chocolate. Do her makeup and/or hair. Or pamper her with a gift card to either a nail or hair salon or BOTH. 

    

2. Night (or day) on the town: Dress Mom in her finest duds for a night (or day) to remember. Whisk her away to her favorite restaurant, followed by dessert at a local ice cream parlor or even a movie or concert. Create an invitation, hire a limo or bring some flowers to make it an outing she’ll never forget!

    

3. Trip down memory lane: Sit down with Mom and thumb through photographs of days gone by. Talk with her about each picture — the people, places and things that trigger warm memories. Make sure to include newer photos too, so Mom doesn’t dwell on the past and focuses on the bright events in her life now and in the future.

    

4. Long distance surprise: Dial up Skype, Facebook or Periscope to connect Mom LIVE with children and/or grandchildren who can’t be there to celebrate the special day in person.
