Personal Care Services with Visiting Angels

Does your aging parent or loved one need extra assistance around the house? Personal care services can help them remain independent.

Signs Your Loved One Needs Help

There are many signs that an aging loved one needs help around the house. One of the biggest indicators is difficulty performing activities of daily living (ADLs). ADLs are the basic tasks of self care and home maintenance that independent people perform regularly.

As we age, many of us lose the energy, balance and mobility that these tasks require. This can lead to a decline in personal hygiene, nutrition, home cleanliness, and even personal safety.

Let’s explore the two categories of ADLs: basic and instrumental.

Basic ADLs include the fundamental self-care tasks people perform every day. These include bathing, transferring, getting dressed, feeding oneself, toileting, and continence.

Instrumental ADLs are the skills and tasks necessary for a person to live independently. While IADLs are not fundamental to a person’s survival, they are necessary aspects of living in society. Instrumental ADLs include skills like paying bills, shopping for groceries, preparing food and balancing a checkbook. IADLs also encompass household tasks like cleaning, doing laundry, performing basic household maintenance, and finding transportation.

Is your loved one struggling to complete basic or instrumental ADLs? Look for these signs:

  • Bills going unpaid
  •  Excess clutter or grime in the home
  • Laundry or dishes piling up
  • Missing important appointments
  • Forgetting to take medications
  • Poor diet or weight loss
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • New dents or scratches on the car

If your loved one has recently been diagnosed with a mobility-limiting disease like Parkinson’s, or if they have recently undergone surgery, personal care assistance may be necessary.
