Four ways to enjoy autumn

There is nothing like autumn in the Midwest. It a glorious season when the fall colors at are their peak and apples and pumpkins are plentiful. It’s a season of shadowy sunshine-a relief after the summer’s rays have relinquished their intensity.

Autumn in Ohio is a festive time as we kick off a season of gratitude, family and joy. While things look a bit different this year, there is still plenty to celebrate. Consider these four ways to enjoy autumn in 2020. Scarecrow

Find your happy place

There are a lot of ways that the pandemic has restricted our mobility. While it is not the best time to be inside, it is a beautiful time to enjoy nature, and autumn is the perfect season to do so. The weather extends a final opportunity to relish the great outdoors before the winter chill is upon us.

Think about what the ideal outdoor experience means for you. Maybe it’s a walk on your street or perhaps it’s watching a sunrise on your patio. Maybe it means buying a birdfeeder and observing those hardy friends that tend to stick around all winter long. Whatever it is, create your happy place and mindfully position yourself to capture the beauty of this time.

Engage your senses

It’s amazing how memory is unlocked by our senses. Think about what scents came alive for you during different eras of your life and awaken those in your home. If you grew up in a family who used a lot of fragrant spices while cooking, consider asking your Visiting Angels caregiver to help you plant an indoor herb garden. Other ways to unlock your senses can include roasting pumpkin seeds, bringing out old records and lighting candles. Dig deep and rekindle those elements that once made the autumn and the holiday season glow brightly.

Devour the season

We can’t talk about engaging the senses without discussing autumn foods such as candy corn, popcorn balls, fruit pies, apple sauce and savory harvest dishes. Working in the kitchen may not be your forte but do what you can and consider calling in your caregivers, children, or grandchildren to assist. Follow the safety protocol and have your kitchen staff come in one at a time (masks up, of course). Then, cook and bake those dishes that mean autumn for your family. If you can’t cook everything you’d like to, focus on one or two basic dishes. If that is out of reach, you can write down your recipes and send them to your family to cook.

Be grateful

It’s been a hard year, and we have plenty of reasons to feel spent, angry and exhausted. But we get to have another holiday season and see what 2021 has in store for us. Let us congratulate ourselves for getting through this difficult year and say a prayer for those who are struggling. Then let us count all the ways we are lucky. We can make it great, and we owe that to ourselves!
