Celebrating Older Adults in the Denver Area on National Senior Citizens Day

On National Senior Citizens Day, you should spend as much time with your elderly loved ones as you can. Here are some fun ways to spend the holiday in the Denver area.

Many people are not aware that we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day on August 21st. While everyone should celebrate older adults and everything they have done for the country throughout their lives all year round, it is good that they have a day dedicated just to themselves and their accomplishments. At Visiting Angels Denver, we look forward to National Seniors Day and wish to share the joys of this holiday with families and the seniors we provide home care assistance to.

An Important Holiday

While National Senior Citizens Day is unfortunately not as popular as Mother's Day or Father's Day, it is equally significant and we hope it will only keep growing in popularity in the years to come.

This year, we are celebrating National Senior Citizens Day for the 31st year in a row, as it was declared a national holiday in 1988. That year, Ronald Reagan made a presidential proclamation, signing the holiday into law. To quote the proclamation:

"For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute."

Reagan also asked that we "[make] sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older." These words are inspiring not just for our home care assistance team, but to the entire community we serve in Wheat Ridge and throughout the Denver area.

Celebrate the Holiday in Style

If you are wondering how to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day with your senior loved one, we believe that nothing would make your parent or relative happier than to spend the day with loved ones. There are many restaurants and shops across the nation that offer special discounts and promotions for seniors on the holiday, so it may be a good idea to eat out with your loved one at popular local places like Sam's No. 3 or Table 6 or take them shopping at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.

Since it's August, it might also be nice to spend quality time outdoors. Consider going to the Denver Botanic Gardens at York Street or have a nice picnic at Prospect Park in Wheat Ridge. If your loved one enjoys watching movies, you should definitely check out what the Denver Mart Drive-In has to offer.

It is important to keep in mind, however, that a nice day at home may be even more enjoyable for seniors. Our home care assistance team recommends cooking something nice for your loved one, playing their favorite games with them or watching a movie together.
