If you or your loved one are in need of "around-the-clock" home care, with minimal or no need for dedicated care during sleeping hours, and suitable sleeping quarters for a caregiver, our Live-In Home Care in Fall City services may be worth considering. Subject to guidelines established by Washington State's Department of Health (DOH, see below), our Live-In Home Care service allows two or more of our Angels to reside in your home while providing care over three consecutive 24-hour shifts, at which point a second dedicated Angel would reside in your home for the same period.

Benefits of Live-In Home Care

Benefits of such an approach include having an Angel in your home during all hours, including sleeping hours, without being charged for those hours. In addition, if the caregiver can safely take three one-hour breaks during which the caregiver can leave the home, those three hours may be excluded from your invoice each shift.

In essence, subject to the DOH conditions outlined below, you would only be charged during the eight-hour period (and the optional three 1-hour breaks) should the caregiver be needed. This assumes you or your loved one does not need an alert/awake caregiver during this period. You would only be charged during this period for time the caregiver is needed (e.g., the occasional stand-by assist to and from the bathroom at night, or during any of the three 1-hour breaks).

Live-In Shift Definition and DOH Requirements

The formal definition of a Live-In shift, and the related DOH requirements are as follows: A Live-In Caregiver works 24-hour shifts, and sleeps in the home of the Client during each shift. The law allows that up to eight (8) hours of sleep time and three (3) uninterrupted 1-hour meal periods may be excluded from work time during a 24-hour Live-In shift, leaving thirteen (13) hours of actual billed/paid work time for the Client and Caregiver. However, the following conditions apply:

• If the Caregiver's 8-hour sleep period is interrupted, the interruption must be counted as hours worked.
• If the Caregiver does not receive a minimum of five (5) hours of uninterrupted sleep time, the entire 8-hour sleep period must be counted as hours worked.
• If the Caregiver sleeps more than 8 hours, only 8 hours may be credited as sleep time.
• The Caregiver must have adequate sleeping facilities for the sleep exception to apply.
• The Caregiver should receive three (3) uninterrupted 1-hour meal periods during each 24-hour shift.

Interruptions During Sleep Periods

Should the Caregiver be called upon to perform any duties for Client during the night and the Caregiver's 8-hour sleep time is interrupted, the interruption will be considered work time and will be billed to the Client. If the Caregiver does not receive a minimum of 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep, the entire 8-hour period will be billed to the Client. If the Caregiver does not receive three uninterrupted 1-hour meal periods, the time will be billed to the Client.
