Caregiver Tested, Senior Approved

Here are five caregiver-tested movies that will be sure to please the older adults in your life and keep you and the family intrigued as well:

It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World – 1963

Adding this zany slapstick comedy to the repertoire may bring a smile to the face of your loved one from nostalgia, but the whole room will soon be laughing out loud as this classic ensemble cast led by Spencer Tracy looks for a mysterious fortune “under a big W!”

For younger viewers, the film may appear to be a period piece, but elderly movie buffs will appreciate the trip down memory lane.

Julie & Julia – 2009

This quirky, intriguing film invites us into the lives of Julie (writer Julie Powell) and Julia (fabled chef Julia Child) in overlapping stories. Acting queen Meryl Streep stars in this appealing comedy-drama alongside Amy Adams. Julia Child, a Paris housewife in the 1950s, discovers her passion at Le Cordon Bleu and publishes a cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.” In the intertwining story, it’s 2002, and Julie Powell is an underemployed writer with an unpublished novel who decides to cook all the recipes in Julia’s book and blog about it.

Seniors will enjoy Julie & Julia's ability to weave the past into the present, concocting surprisingly sweet results.

The King’s Speech – 2010

This historical drama won the Academy Award™ for Best Picture in 2011 for director Tom Hooper. It follows the story of Prince Albert (played by Colin Firth), the successor to the English throne in the 1930s, and the speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) who helped him overcome his stammer. Helena Bonham Carter plays Albert’s wife, Elizabeth, who hires Lionel Logue to help the king surpass his shortcomings.

Seniors who appreciate the finer movies in life will be extremely satisfied by The King's Speech.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – 2011

This ensemble comedy-drama follows a group of British seniors who travel to India to retire at the titular hotel, only to find that it is far from what they expected. Through their adventures, they learn important life lessons and gain a newfound appreciation for their lives.

This movie provided amazing roles for many stellar older actors and is a favorite among seniors.

I’ll See You in My Dreams – 2015

I'll See You in My Dreams is a thoughtful, funny movie about beginning life anew at any age. Blythe Danner plays Carol, a widow and former songstress who fears her best years are behind her once she faces grief again. But with the help of her three best friends (Rhea Perlman, Mary Kay Place, and June Squibb), she decides to take life head-on and have some new adventures. She meets a new potential suitor (Sam Elliot), strikes up a friendship with her pool maintenance man (Martin Starr), and reconnects with her daughter (Malin Akerman).

Many seniors will feel connected to the character Carol who must consider how to continue moving forward while enduring the worst of what life has to offer and the optimism it takes to be successful.
