Outside Activities for Seniors to Enjoy

Sometimes taking a brisk walk or going outside for fresh air can seem more like a chore than a fun pastime for seniors. Even though some outdoor activities may not be suitable for seniors, there are many that they can still enjoy. Being outdoors and surrounded by nature gives the body energy and rejuvenates the soul. Therefore, seniors should find outdoor activities they enjoy. Here are some fun and stimulating outdoor activities that seniors can enjoy, either alone or with their friends.

Gardening

Seniors enjoy gardening for a variety of reasons. Gardening is popular among seniors because it helps maintain strength and flexibility without exerting too much effort. In addition, the beautiful flowers and produce that result from gardening are worth the extra effort. A sense of accomplishment and pride can be felt when growing plants, flowers, and produce.

Bird Watching

Watching birds is not as physically demanding as gardening, but it is a peaceful way to spend time outdoors. It also allows seniors to reflect on the day. Some people enjoy naming the birds and determining what type of birds they are looking at, which stimulates cognitive function. As well as providing sensory stimulation, birdwatching engages all of the senses. Feeding the birds while watching them strengthens arm muscles. Due to its calm nature, bird watching is a good activity for seniors who may be less mobile.

Outdoor Picnic

Calling all foodies! Picnics are great outdoor activities for seniors. Picnics are a great time for enjoying great food and socializing. Don't forget to bring an umbrella or Easy-Up to the picnic. Seniors can enjoy the fresh air while protecting their skin at the same time. Caregivers and seniors can both relax, eat good food, and converse during this activity.

Photography

People mistakenly believe that photography is for professionals only. Anyone, including seniors, can take up photography if they have the right tools and motivation. Seniors can express their creative talents through photography by doing little physical activity and still enjoying the outdoors. You can also buy cheap camera equipment online.

Outdoor Crafts

Participating in arts and crafts, whether done at home or at an organized event, is always fun. Missouri has craft fairs all over the state, which make for family-friendly events. Missouri has it all, from Art Fairs to Renaissance Festivals, and everything in between.

Outdoor Music

Music has been shown to reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain. Therefore, listening to music in their free time is a good idea for seniors. Whether it's classical, rock, or smooth jazz, music can positively affect your mind and body. Farmington hosts many outdoor live music events throughout the year.

These are just a few outdoor activities seniors can enjoy. While it is nice sometimes to stay inside and watch a movie, it is also important for seniors to enjoy the outdoors and its attractions. Our caregivers at Visiting Angels Farmington are vigilant about making sure their clients get outside as often as possible, understanding the importance of outdoor exposure. We want your loved one to feel safe and cared for both inside the home and out, and we will do everything in our power to achieve that goal.
