Spring Health Tips for Seniors

Like how nature goes dormant during the winter season, many older adults slow down and spend more time indoors once winter arrives. Come spring, many seniors are ready for a change of pace. Fortunately, the arrival of spring welcomes us all to spend more time outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine.

If you’re a senior who’s been feeling sluggish this winter season, use this spring to rejuvenate your health and wellness. Here are five spring health tips for seniors to help get you back on track.

 Spend Time Outdoors Daily

Take advantage of the warmer weather by spending time outdoors daily or as often as possible. Spending time outdoors in the sun is a great way to soak up vitamin D. It can also help improve your mood and cognition. As the weather warms up, enjoy your morning cup of coffee outside. Take up gardening to increase your physical activity as well as to improve your mood. Go for a walk around the neighborhood to rebuild endurance and release endorphins. If you’ve spent most of the winter idle, take it slow in the beginning. Start with short amounts of outdoor activity before going full throttle.

 Plate Up with Seasonal Foods

As the seasons change, use the new season to change up your menu. Take advantage of seasonal foods that are available in your grocery store or farmer’s market. Seasonal foods are often more affordable and flavorful when they’re in season. Take a break from heavier winter meals and brighten up your plate with spring produce, such as asparagus, peas, lettuce, strawberries, artichokes, kiwi, cherries, and spinach.

 Manage Seasonal Allergies Appropriately

Spring is notorious for seasonal allergies and can often be the worst season for it. As nature revives itself in the spring, the downside means more pollen is released into the air. If you struggle with seasonal allergies, take precautions to reduce your exposure. Close windows and doors on days when the pollen count is predicted to be high. Wear sunglasses that wrap around your face when you head outdoors to prevent exposure to pollen. Take allergy medications as prescribed. Talk to your doctor before taking over-the-counter seasonal allergy medications.

 Take in More Water

As you increase your activity level in the spring, it’s important that you also increase your water intake.

Although anyone can become dehydrated, older adults are at a greater risk. It’s a serious condition that can be extremely dangerous for older adults. Reduce your risk for dehydration by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, including after exercise or other physical activities.

 Reschedule Missed Doctor Appointments

Finally, reschedule any doctor appointments you may have had to miss due to poor weather during the winter season. Spring is a great time to give yourself a tune-up. Ask your doctor about relevant tests you may need, such as routine labs to check glucose or cholesterol levels. Get your doctor’s approval before starting any new exercise routines. Also, talk with your doctor about your medications and ask if any can be eliminated or adjusted. Don’t forget to schedule routine visits with your dentist, optometrist, or any other specialist overseeing your health.
