The best tools for dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia are empathy, flexibility and humor. Medications should be a last resort. Don’t try and convince a person with dementia that they’re worrying about something that isn’t real. Opt for distraction over confrontation. People with Alzheimer’s have brains that are processing differently and processing more slowly. Be patient and be kind. Identifying patient’s anxiety triggers can be helpful. Old coping mechanisms may no longer work and an change in environment can be catastrophic.
