Dementia- Person Centered Care
Person centered care addresses all the needs of the individual and not just the tasks, diseases/illness, or medical demands. It involves knowing the person and honoring their preferences and finds the best way to promote a positive environment where the person with dementia can experience well-being.
The first step in providing person centered care is gathering specific information about the client to customize their plan of care. Their care plan is developed with the client’s specific needs in mind.
How can our Angels help with their needs?
Physiological Needs- assist with activities of daily living and food preparation while ensuring clients are warm and comfortable in their home.
Safety- help clients feel safe, secure, and protected by being trustworthy, reliable, non-judgmental, punctual and consistent in providing quality care.
Loving and Belonging- for clients with dementia who can no longer engage in activities, Visiting Angels caregivers can help by being present with the client (sitting with them, holding their hand, making eye contact when speaking to the client)
Self Esteem- Showing respect and active listening when exchanging stories, encouraging conversations, and bestowing honest and sincere praise. Helping the client maintain a nice appearance can boost self-esteem.
Caring for a client is more than just aiding them with their tasks. Our caregivers at Visiting Angels take a more personable approach to client care, instead of just looking at a task list. Allowing the clients to make choices where ever possible such as how and when to perform an activity will maintain a feeling of greater control and promotes self esteem.
