How Can You Assist Your Loved One Who Is Living With Alzheimer’s?

-Put together a routine- come up with a schedule or routine and complete tasks at the same time each day, for example, showering each morning after waking up and then eating breakfast after.

-Encourage independence and participation- encourage them to participate as much as they’re able to in completing tasks for them to retain some of their independence.

-Allow enough time- keep in mind the persons ability and give them (and yourself) enough time to complete each task.

-Support and encourage- Acknowledge when they have completed a task, for example, “you did a great job with your morning routine today.”

-Independent eating- Encourage independent eating if your loved one can. Consider serving finger foods that are easier to handle.

-Find out likes/dislikes- To encourage eating, find out some of your loved one’s favorite foods to serve more often.

-Get the right equipment- additional equipment may be needed such as grab bars or raised toilet seats to maintain a safe environment.

It can be hard when someone you care about is living with Alzheimer’s. Someone living with Alzheimer’s may need more help with things such as bathing, shaving, toileting and/or meal prep. If you or your loved one needs some additional help, allow Visiting Angels of Frederick MD to assist!

"We have been so lucky to find Visiting Angels. The care givers that help my parents have a deep sense of respect, kindness, and are very thoughtful in offering any suggestions that may help with my parents daily routines. One of the most important values Visiting Angels seems to work towards is making sure the client and the care giver are a good fit. This is incredibly reassuring for us all as a family."
