Tips for Family Members When Planning for Care

It can be difficult to approach the conversation about home care with your loved one. Ensuring your loved one feels understood and keeping them involved in the planning can help things go smoothly. Visiting Angels has continuously been America’s choice in helping aging seniors with their daily tasks and home care. Allow us to help you plan your loved one’s care needs!

  1. Talk about care with your loved one- involve your loved one as much as possible in planning care, it is important for them to be apart of the process.
  2. Actively listen- Once the topic has been brought up, listen to your loved one to insure they feel understood and heard.
  3. Come up with a plan- whether it’s a short illness or a crisis like COVID 19, come up with a short term and a long-term plan that answers the “who, what, and where”.
  4. Gather important documents- Gather all important documents such as a living will or a POLST form and keep them in an easily accessible area.
  5. Keep a log- Keep a journal or a log somewhere easily accessible that contains the key information someone should know about your loved one, such as medications or likes and dislikes.
  6. Get help! - Get some help from experts to help relieve some stress. This could be an insurance agent, financial planner, or elder law attorney.
  7. Communication is key- Keep your plan up to date and well communicated with everyone involved.

"We have been so lucky to find Visiting Angels. The care givers that help my parents have a deep sense of respect, kindness, and are very thoughtful in offering any suggestions that may help with my parents daily routines. One of the most important values Visiting Angels seems to work towards is making sure the client and the care giver are a good fit. This is incredibly reassuring for us all as a family."
