5 Keys to Successful Caregiving
At Visiting Angels, we know just how demanding and challenging having a career as a senior caregiver can be. But we know that caregiving is also incredibly rewarding, and we commend you for choosing such a selfless profession! Below, we’re sharing a few our favorite tips to help you remember that you are valued, even when you don’t necessary feel like you are. Practicing these tips will help you provide successful senior care always.
Have Patience
We get it – keeping your frustrations bottled up all the time can be difficult, especially when you are frequently communicating with others who share concerns for your senior patients. But as a caregiver, practicing patience can offer you plenty of insight and understanding. Patience is learned and requires your time and effort, and it is absolutely worthwhile.
Practice Forgiveness
In this career, being hard on yourself is all too easy. No one is as critical of us as we are ourselves! However, caregiving is a fluid industry. No one knows all there is about caregiving, and you will learn something new every single day. We ask you to be forgiving with yourself and your missteps.
Talk to Someone
Experiencing stress and hardships in our career as a caregiver is common, and one of our tendencies may be to keep our feelings and emotions inside of us. But not expressing our irritations can be damaging, so we highly suggest talking to someone to help you let things go. Sharing feelings can be such a relief, so ask your spouse, a sibling, a friend, or a counselor to lend you their ear.
Release Your Stress
If you are someone who is not comfortable with talking through your feelings with others, then that’s okay! Fortunately, there are other healthy outlets for you to release your stress. Daily exercise will help improve your mood by releasing endorphins, or you can even express your emotions by writing in a journal or a blog!
Don’t Take Things Personally
We mean it – don’t take anything too personally. When you receive harsh critiques from family members or from your senior patents, just keep in mind that everyone is going through something different. This is a challenging time for all involved.
