Sundowners Syndrome: What It Is and How to Cope

If you provide care to a loved one who has dementia or Alzheimer’s, you may have heard about Sundowners Syndrome. This is a condition that is marked by memory loss, confusion, wandering during the evening hours, and agitation. Unfortunately, this syndrome is common and affects up to 20% of seniors who do have Alzheimer’s. The team at Visiting Angels Living Assistance wants to make you aware that individuals with dementia or those who have spent a lot of time in the hospital can have this syndrome too.

Some of the symptoms that may be experienced with Sundowners Syndrome include rapid changes in mood, crying, fear, restlessness, stubbornness, depression, and agitation or anger. The actual cause of the syndrome is unknown, which may make you feel helpless when it comes to your loved one. The Visiting Angels Living Assistance team recommends that you speak with your loved one’s care providers if you are worried or concerned about Sundowners.

Below, our team will discuss with you some of the things you can do to help your loved one when they have Sundowners. The experts at Visiting Angels Living Assistance want to remind you that the below tips can really make a difference.

  • Try to establish a routine for your loved one. Routines are ideal because your loved one will know exactly what to expect and this can combat all feelings of anxiety, confusion, and worry about what is about to happen next
  • Take time to plan the day. Experts recommend that your loved one participates in no more than two activities per day and these activities should be done in the morning hours. Too much activity in the later hours can lead to restlessness in the afternoon and evening
  • Keep the home well lit. It is important to make sure that your loved one’s home is well lit as this will help them remember where they are, and it will prevent falls too
  • Monitor your loved one’s diet. Caffeine and sugary foods or drinks can influence the way your loved one acts. Too much sugar or caffeine near bedtime or sunset hours can make it harder for your loved one to settle down
  • Minimize the noise from TVs, radios, and other electronics in your loved one’s home. This will help reduce any anxiety or stress that could be caused by loud noises
