Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Staying Healthy During the Holidays

The holidays are a wonderful time of year, but with so much going on, they can also take a toll on your physical and mental health. If you tend to feel physically or mentally exhausted by the end of the year, there are actions you can take to stay healthy during the holidays.

Tips for Your Physical Health

Many people struggle to take care of themselves physically during the holidays, but there are steps you can take to maintain your physical health during the festive season.

Eat Mindfully

Many holidays revolve around large meals, and it can be easy to overindulge in your favorite foods. While it’s okay to enjoy a few treats you don’t eat regularly, you still want to be mindful of what you’re putting into your body. If you have a doctor-recommended diet, let family and friends know so they can prepare that’s healthy for you to eat.

If there are not too many foods you have to steer away from for medical reasons, you still want to do your best not to overeat. Eat everything in moderation and give yourself time to digest your meals before helping yourself to another serving.

Stay Active

If you exercise regularly, it’s natural to spend less time working out during the holidays, but you don’t want to become inactive. Physical activity, such as walking or yoga, keeps your body healthy and strong. It also helps you stick to your routine, so it’s easier to get back to your complete exercise schedule after the holidays.

Minimize Your Contact with Germs

The holidays fall right in the middle of the flu and cold season, and spending time in person with your loved ones increases your chances of contracting or spreading sickness. Most colds and flu spread through tiny droplets that transfer between people through coughing or sneezing. To reduce your chances of getting sick, make sure to wash your hands regularly, especially before eating or after interacting with people. Also, consider social distancing practices or wearing a face mask if you’re in large groups of people, especially if you don’t know everyone and are unsure if they’re sick.

Tips for Your Mental Health

The holidays can feel stressful and overwhelming at times. Consider the following tips to protect your mental health.

Stick to Your Routine

A lot of unexpected things can come up during the holidays. You may have family visiting, gatherings to attend, or other festivities to plan, but don’t let that interfere with your daily routines. Sticking to a daily schedule can help you feel more grounded and reduce stress. You may not have the time to commit to your complete daily routine each day, but try to keep at least part of your day structured. Pick out at least one or two things you do each day to help you feel like there’s a sense of routine.

Don’t Over Commit

Try not to feel obligated to attend every holiday event. If you’re trying to fit in too many activities, you’ll likely feel burned out before the season is over. Instead, be honest with yourself about how many events you can fit into your schedule. If you don’t have time for everything, explain to your friends and family that you need downtime to recharge. Chances are, they’re probably feeling a bit overwhelmed too and will completely understand.

Take Time for Yourself

It’s essential to set time aside for yourself to decompress each day, especially during the holidays. Give yourself at least 30 minutes to relax and enjoy your own company at the end of each day. This could include taking a bath, reading a book, or watching your favorite television show. By taking time for yourself each night, you’re allowing yourself to recharge and reduce your chances of feeling stressed or burnt out later.
