Tips for Improving Your Mental Health

Tips for Improving Your Mental Health

It’s easy for people to overlook their mental health, but your moods, emotions, and social well-being are vital to your overall health. When you don’t prioritize your mental health, you risk severe health concerns such as depression, anxiety, and stress. Don’t let your poor mental health affect life as you age, and take steps to improve your mental well-being.

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Your physical and mental health are connected. The better you physically feel will directly influence your mental well-being. Taking care of your physical health doesn’t mean you have to spend hours working out or revamping your diet. Instead, find small ways to boost your physical health each day. That can mean setting aside 30 minutes to walk, taking a yoga class, preparing and eating a nutritious meal, or taking steps to quit smoking or reduce your alcohol intake.

Another important aspect of taking care of your physical health is regularly seeing your doctor. Make sure you attend annual physicals or schedule any follow-up appointments as needed. When you’re with your health care team, remain open and honest about your physical and mental feelings. The more you share your experiences, the better your doctors can help.

Find Your Purpose

Many older adults go through a transition after retirement where they feel like they no longer have a purpose outside of their work or family. If you’re feeling stagnant, try to identify your purpose outside of your work or family. What brings you joy? How do you like to spend your time? In your earlier years, what did you always dream about trying? Write down your answers to these questions and figure out what this next stage of your life can bring you.

If you have difficulty separating yourself from your previous work, you may want to consider volunteer opportunities related to your field. Reach out to organizations you support and ask if there’s anything you can contribute. There are tons of nonprofits that need expertise in everything, from accounting and marketing to sales and engineering.

Connect with Others

Humans are social creatures, and socialization is essential to our health. On days when you’re feeling upset or lonely, call a loved one. You can spend a few minutes catching up or invite them over for a meal. You don’t have to talk about heavy topics that are burdening you. Instead, discuss something fun like your favorite television show or reminisce on a vacation or trip you enjoyed. These light-hearted conversations can help you break away from factors negatively affecting your mental health.

As an older adult, you may find you don’t have as many meaningful friendships or connections as you once did. It’s common to lose friends with age, but you’re never too old to make new ones. Consider signing up for a book club or hiking group where you can connect with new people who share similar interests as you.

Ask for Help When You Need It

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it can be challenging to reach out for help. But not asking for help will only lead to more stress and anxiety. Don’t hesitate to reach out to family or friends if you need assistance with anything from daily tasks around the house to transportation to run errands or see the doctor. If you don’t have loved ones nearby, you may consider hiring a caregiver.

Sometimes the help you need is beyond your friends’ and families’ capabilities. If your mental health inhibits you from enjoying life and taking primary care of yourself, reach out to a professional health specialist, such as a therapist or psychiatrist. A trained mental health professional can provide treatment and address any underlying conditions that may contribute to your mental health.
