Spring Cleaning Your Home and Your Health

Spring Cleaning Your Home and Your Health

Spring is the season of growth, which is why so many people take this time to spring clean. There’s something about the fresh air and emerging vegetation that makes us want to reorganize our houses and rid of anything that no longer serves a purpose. Not only is it a time to clean out our homes, but it’s also a perfect time to take note of our health. With a bit of spring cleaning of our home and health, we can set ourselves up for a successful rest of the year.

Spring Cleaning Your Home

As winter comes to an end, there’s probably a few areas of your home that could use a little extra attention. Keep these things in mind while you start your spring cleaning.

  • Get your summer wardrobe out of storage. If you’re someone who has a winter and summer wardrobe, the start of spring is the perfect time to pull your summer clothes out of storage. While you’re packing up your winter wear, start a donation pile for anything you didn’t wear that year. If you went through an entire season without wearing it, chances are you won’t wear it next year, and it’s just taking space in your house.
  • Find items to donate. We all have things in our homes that we don’t need or use. Walkthrough every room and find at least one thing you no longer use that you can donate. Getting rid of things can be difficult, but be honest with yourself about the last time you’ve used something and if it still serves a purpose in your home.
  • Clean out your fridge, freezer, and pantry. We’ve all experienced that time at the grocery store where we purchase something new, intending to try it only to have it live in the back of our freezer or pantry for months. Go through your fridge, freezer, and pantry and discard anything you haven’t touched since the new year. If it’s nonperishable and hasn’t expired, you can donate it to your local food pantry.
  • Deep clean the surfaces you touch most. The winter months tend to bring germs, but it’s even more vital to disinfect your home with the global pandemic this winter. Deep clean the surfaces in your home that you touch most, such as countertops and doorknobs. Don’t also forget to clean the handles of your cabinets and light switches.

Spring Cleaning Your Health

Many of us spend spring taking care of our home, so why not take care of our health too. Take charge of your health this year with these tips!

  • Schedule a physical with your doctor. No matter your age, you should be attending annual exams to keep up with your health. Doctor’s appointments become more critical as you age because it allows doctors to monitor your health and notice any concerning changes. Many conditions are treatable when found earlier, so don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor and share any concerns you may have.
  • Visit your dentist. It would be best to go to your dentist at least twice a year, so take time this spring to schedule your next appointment. People often overlook dental health, but poor gums and teeth can lead to or be a sign of a more serious health condition.
  • Get an eye exam. Our vision changes with age, so even if you don’t wear glasses or contacts, you should still attend regular eye exams. Much like dental health, vision changes could signal a more serious problem, so it’s important to get looked at regularly.
  • Make time for an activity that brings you joy. We talk a lot about our physical health but forget to prioritize our mental and emotional health. In the new season, make sure to carve out time in your day to do something you love. It can be as simple as reading a book once a day or going for a weekend walk around the neighborhood; whatever brings you joy.
