Outdoor Exercise to Enjoy the Warm Weather

Outdoor Exercise to Enjoy the Warm Weather

We all know how important exercise is, but it can be hard to motivate yourself during the winter months. If you want to exercise, you either have to brave the cold or do a repetitive at-home workout. With spring in full bloom, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the warm weather and get involved in some outdoor activities.

Exercises to Break a Sweat

Are you the type of person who enjoys feeling tired after a workout? Then these sweaty exercises are for you!

  • Jogging- Put on a supportive pair of running shoes and take a jog around your neighborhood. Or do some laps at a nearby track. If you have pain in your shins or joints when running, try running on a softer surface such as grass.
  • Hiking- There are many unique places to go hiking in Horsham, such as Pennypack Creek Trail or Four Mills Nature Reserve. When on a hike, be sure to bring water and only walk trails you’re confident you can complete. To be extra safe while hiking, it never hurts to bring a friend.
  • Cycling- Cycling is a low-impact sport that can be great for all ages. If you’re not comfortable riding in the street, visit a park or bike path and enjoy an outdoor adventure. Make sure to bring lots of water and don’t worry about how fast or far you’re going. Bike until you start feeling winded, then head back home.
  • Swimming- Swimming is another excellent low-impact sport that also improves your heart health. It’s the perfect form of exercise if you experience joint or muscle pain. Plus, it helps improve flexibility, muscle strength, and tone. Check out local outdoor pools, or you can even enjoy a day of swimming at a nearby lake.

Exercises to Improve Mobility and Balance

Getting in a good workout isn’t just about increasing your heart rate and breaking a sweat. You can also focus on activities to improve your mobility, flexibility, and balance.

  • Yoga- Sure, you can do yoga indoors, but there’s something extra relaxing about yoga in the park. Grab your yoga mat and head to a quiet area outdoors for some freestyle yoga. Or you can sign up for an outdoor yoga session through studios such as Amari Yoga Studios.
  • Tai Chi- Tai Chi is a martial art practice with a mix of defense training and meditation. It’s a great alternative to traditional meditation in that it’s physically active but with mindfulness exercises. You can do Tai Chi can indoors, but it can be even more enjoyable when practiced in nature.
  • Dynamic Stretching- Most people know the importance of stretching before and after a workout, but dynamic stretching can be a great exercise on its own. Dynamic stretches are movement-based stretches, as opposed to static stretches, where you hold the position. Dynamic stretches include lunges, arm circles, and leg swings. Find some space outside or in your yard to enjoy some dynamic stretching.

Exercises to Enjoy with the Family

Spending time outside can be a physical activity for the whole family. If you want to enjoy the outdoors as a small group, consider the following:

  • Frisbee- Do you have young kids in your family who need to get some energy out? Grab a frisbee, head to an open space, and toss a frisbee around. If you cannot run around or throw too far, stand close together and enjoy lightly tossing the frisbee back and forth.
  • Walking- Going for walks with friends is a great way to catch up with loved ones while also keeping your body healthy. Take a walk around your neighborhood or head to a nearby park.
  • Golf- If you enjoy walking but want something a little more exciting, play a round of golf with your family or friends. You can visit a local golf course or set up a mini-golf course in your yard by lying cups on their sides and using them as holes.
