Ways to Give Back to Your Community

Ways to Give Back to Your Community

December is the month of giving, and there are plenty of ways you can give back to your community of Horsham to help improve your neighborhood and the lives of your neighbors.

Volunteer your time and services

Volunteering is one of the most common ways people give back to their community. There are plenty of notable nonprofits and organizations in Horsham and the surrounding areas that you can volunteer where you can volunteer your time and services.

  • Pennypack Farm and Education Center: Pennyback Farm is a local, organically grown farm that provides services and education to the community. They have a giving program that supplies people with fresh produce and educates people of all ages about sustainable farming and how to grow food.
  • One House at a Time (OHAAT): OHAAT helps families in need by providing them with the necessities of a functional home environment. Their Beds for Kids program ensures children have a comfortable sleeping situation by providing bedding, beds, and other tools to encourage healthy bedtime habits. Volunteers can help with sorting bedding, packaging supplies, or sewing pillowcases.
  • Girls on the Run: Girls on the Run is an evidence-based program to inspire young girls, help build confidence, and develop essential skills. Volunteers can help coach, or they can help set up and organize races.

Make a donation

Sometimes it’s challenging to volunteer somewhere physically, but if it’s within your means, you can always donate to neighborhood charities. Even a $5 donation can provide resources and goods to those in need.

  • Jefferson Health-Horsham: Donations to Jefferson Health go toward research and providing care to underserved neighborhoods. Some donations also go toward fellowships and scholarships to help bring more diverse minds into healthcare professions.
  • Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue: Donations to Tails of the Tundra help the rescue to care for abandoned huskies and place them into new homes.

Clean up your block

A simple way to give back to your community is to help keep it clean. If you notice garbage on the side of the street or the sidewalk, grab a pair of gloves and a garbage bag and pick them up. Even just picking up the trash on your block when you see it can make a significant difference in the overall cleanliness of the neighborhood.

Plant a tree

Trees are an essential part of the ecosystem and provide a lot of value to the communities where they live. Trees absorb harmful gasses and air pollution, such as carbon dioxide, ammonia, and sulfur dioxide. They also release oxygen, which all living mammals need to survive. Consider putting a tree in your yard, or you can contact a town representative and ask if they need help planting trees in public places around the neighborhood. You can also put a tree in a sunny area to provide people and animals with shade during the summer.
