More Millennials Taking On the Role of Family Elder Care in Hot Springs, Hot Springs Village, Benton, and the Surrounding Area

Elder Care in Hot Springs, Hot Springs Village, Benton, and the Surrounding Area

An increasing number of millennials are taking on the role of primary caregiver for the aging adults in their lives as the baby boomer generation grows older. An estimated 10 million millennials aged 25 to 40 are now the primary caretakers for the seniors in their families. The estimate totals to 1 out of every 4 family caretakers being a millennial.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, millennial caretakers began to face many struggles, as did the older adults for whom they take care of. The needs of seniors had to be met while also making sure they were safe. Because older adults' immune systems are weaker, quarantine became vital to ensure their health and safety. Learning to navigate was one of several challenges that millennial caretakers encountered.

Several millennials have had to alter their lives and their plans to take care of loved ones. Many of them have dropped out of school and quit their jobs because of the time-consuming and energy-draining nature of caring for elderly adults. They often find themselves in need of more flexible time accommodations that schools and employers can not provide. Sometimes, they are also hesitant to request these accommodations from their professors and bosses. Discontinuing their jobs and educations can put even more stress on millennial caretakers, specifically those who quit their jobs because the financial burden of caretaking becomes even more challenging to handle.

An estimated 53 percent of millennial caretakers also work full-time jobs. About 27 percent of their income is allocated to the costs of caring for their elderly loved ones. Due to the costs of modern medicine, modern technology, and higher living expenses, this percentage has increased drastically in the last decade or so.

The mental and physical toll that caretaking has on millennials can significantly impact their abilities to function healthily. Many millennial caretakers face significant amounts of stress due to the time-consuming and energy-draining nature of caring for the seniors in their lives. Providing care often means losing out on the sleep, relaxation, and self-care necessary for them to live healthy and productive lives.

Respite is where elder care agencies may become a great option. Agencies like Visiting Angels work to provide care services to seniors and relieve some of their caretakers' stress. Using an agency allows caretakers to take some time for themselves and rejuvenate to be at their best and healthiest. Some of the services offered by elder care agencies are:

  • Light housekeeping
  • Transportation
  • Monitoring symptoms and side effects
  • Medication reminders
  • Social and emotional support
