Why Vitamin D is Important for Seniors in Hot Springs AR, and Nearby Communities

Home Care in Hot Springs and Surrounding Areas

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is required for the body to function at its maximum potential. Its absorption of calcium promotes bone growth and maintains healthy teeth, muscles, and immune systems. Vitamin D is nicknamed “the sunshine vitamin” because the body most easily absorbs this vitamin when a person spends time out in the sun. If someone is not exposed to the sunlight enough, this can cause a deficiency and result in some issues.

Issues Cause by Vitamin D Deficiency

Weaker muscles and bones - A condition known as osteoporosis can result from a vitamin D deficiency. The bones become more porous and less sturdy and are then more susceptible to injuries.

Weakened immune system - Without enough vitamin D, a person’s immune system can become weak, making them more likely to contract infections and viruses and less able to fight them off.

Cognitive impairment and depression - Vitamin D is vital in regulating mental and emotional health. Without enough vitamin D, a person’s ability to think clearly may be impacted. Low vitamin D levels can also result in depression.

Increased Risk of Non-Infectious Disease - A lack of vitamin D may put seniors at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Suggestions for increasing your seniors Vitamin D levels

There are several things that seniors can do to increase their vitamin D levels. Some of these are:

  • Being outdoors - Absorbing natural sunlight is the quickest and easiest way for the body to increase its vitamin D levels.
  • Sun lamps - Sun lamps are beneficial during the winter months and rainy days when it isn’t possible to get natural sunlight. These “happy lamps” are available for purchase at stores like Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Amazon.
  • Eat well - Eating a healthy diet allows for more nutrients to enter the body and increases vitamin D levels. Make it a goal for you and your loved ones to eat foods that help you meet the recommended daily vitamin D intake.
  • Dietary supplements - Vitamin D supplements are a great way to ensure that you are getting enough of the nutrient if you’re not sure that food alone is helping you reach the recommended amount.
