Warning Signs of Abuse in Seniors with Dementia

The nature of Dementia makes those who suffer from it vulnerable – Dementia can lead a person to believe they are being abused when they are not, so they may not be believed if they do report it. Unfortunately, this makes them a potential target for abusers. Luckily, you can help protect your elderly loved ones by remaining vigilant. At Visiting Angels, we believe that Caregivers have an important role to play in detecting cases of abuse.

Contrary to public opinion, all Caregivers are not the same. Your Caregivers should do more than assist with daily living, they should observe and report changes in behavior as well as warning signs that could indicate the possible abuse of an elderly loved one living with Dementia. This is something we strongly believe at Visiting Angels.

Here are some of the warning signs your Caregiver should be watching out for:

  • Unexplained bruises or other injuries
  • Marks on wrists that may indicate restraint
  • Glasses broken without adequate explanation
  • Controlling or intimidating behavior toward elderly person
  • Symptoms of distress such as talking to oneself or rocking repeatedly
  • Symptoms of depression
  • Access to elderly person restricted or interfered with
  • Odd spending patterns or missing money
  • Bills not being paid
  • Suspicious new friends or romantic partners
  • Bruises near genitals or breasts or blood on underwear
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Dehydration
  • Untreated medical conditions such as bed sores
  • Living conditions are not sanitary or safe
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Inappropriate clothing for weather
  • Elderly person left alone in public
  • Overdosing on medication or patient overmedicated
  • Not taking medication as scheduled, or patient undermedicated

Of course, many of these warning signs may be caused by Dementia, and not by abuse or neglect. If you suspect abuse, call Adult Protective Services for help. Our Visiting Angels Caregivers are expected to watch for these warning signs and take appropriate action as needed.  Contact Visiting Angels today to get the support you need.
