5 Hot Weather Safety Tips for Seniors

5 Hot Weather Safety Tips for Seniors

Spring is officially in full swing, and summer is just around the corner. But with ‌longer days comes warmer weather. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults are more likely to have chronic medical conditions that impact their body’s response to heat. Seniors don’t sweat as much as younger adults, making them less tolerant to scorching temperatures.

As such, seniors must take the necessary steps to stay safe during the spring and summer seasons. Use these five safety tips to stay safe when temperatures soar.

1. Stay Hydrated

Spending time outside on hot days can cause you to become dehydrated quicker. Older adults have diminished thirst signals, causing them not to know when to consume fluids. Staying adequately hydrated, even when you don’t feel thirsty, keeps you safe. Aim to drink eight or more glasses of water or juice per day. Bring a water bottle with you if you plan on spending time outdoors.

2. Protect Your Skin

Seniors are more susceptible to sunburn and skin damage caused by UV rays. Generously apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more if you’re out in the sun. Reapply it every two hours or if you take a dip in the water.

Seniors should also wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing to protect their skin. Breathable fabrics like cotton will help keep you cool. Protect your face with large sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.

3. Know the Symptoms of Heat-Related Health Risks

Familiarize yourself with the early signs of heat-related health risks, including heat stroke, dehydration, and heat exhaustion. Symptoms to watch for include lethargy, dizziness, confusion, nausea, rapid pulse, and dry skin. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

4. Stay Inside on Scorching Days

Pay attention to the weather before you head outside. On days with extreme heat and humidity, your body works harder to maintain an average temperature. Stay inside in the air conditioning. If you must leave your house, plan to go in the early morning or late afternoon. The sun’s rays are the most powerful between 10 am and 4 pm.

5. Keep in Touch with Your Family, Friends, and Caregiver

Create an emergency contact list of your relatives and friends. Keep it in a place that’s easy for you and others to access in an emergency.
