5 Scrumptious Snacks that Promote Heart Health

5 Scrumptious Snacks that Promote Heart Health

As we age, our risk of heart disease increases. Older adults are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases than younger people. If you smoke or have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, your risk for heart disease is even greater.

February is American Heart Month and the perfect time to develop healthier lifestyle habits that reduce your risk for heart disease.

To help get you started, Visiting Angels in Huntington, West Virginia, made a handy list of our five favorite heart-healthy snacks. Try one of these heart-smart snacks the next time hunger strikes!

1. Apple Slices with Nut Butter

Studies have shown that regularly eating nuts supports heart health. A nutritious and delicious snack to try is apple slices topped with nuts or nut butter. The phytonutrients and pectin in apples keep your cardiovascular system functioning at its best.

2. Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Want some comfort food? If so, try baked sweet potato fries! This snack is a nutritional powerhouse. Sweet potatoes are packed with antioxidants that protect your body from cancer and cardiovascular diseases. You can eat this snack by itself or enjoy it as a side with your dinner.

3. Whole-Grain Crackers with Hummus

Craving something crunchier? Whole-grain crackers with hummus are a satisfying snack! Whole grain contains fiber, which can lower cholesterol. Buy crackers that list whole wheat as the first ingredient. Also, avoid buying crackers with too much added sugar and sodium.

Dip your crackers in hummus for more flavor. You can also enjoy hummus with carrots or celery. Hummus is an excellent source of healthy fats and plant-based proteins. Eating hummus as part of your regular diet can lower blood pressure, blood lipids, and cholesterol.

4. Chia Seed Parfait

There’s no better way to start your day than with a heart-healthy breakfast! Indulge yourself with a chia seed parfait. Mix low-fat Greek yogurt with fresh fruit and chia seeds. These seeds are a triple threat to heart disease and contain protein, omega-3s, and fiber.

Don’t like parfaits? Another healthy breakfast option is a green smoothie. Make a smoothie that contains bananas, kale, almond milk, chia seeds, avocado, and honey. Yum!

5. Mixed Nuts

Hungry? Reach for some nuts! A handful of nuts support heart health. Studies have found that people who eat nuts two to four times per week significantly reduce their risk of heart disease. Try cashews, almonds, or walnuts. A ¼-cup serving of nuts only has about 220 calories and no cholesterol.
