How to Make Healthy Habits Stick

How to Make Healthy Habits Stick

Ah, New Year’s resolutions; we are all so full of ambition until about mid-January when our holiday passions begin to subside. That’s when most New Year’s resolutions are tossed out and forgotten.

But how do we keep up the momentum? How do we truly change and adopt healthy habits that we can live with? We know what we need to do, and making those healthy lifestyle choices feels good. So why is it so tempting to slump back into old patterns? How do we move past that and adopt healthier lifestyles? Here’s what to consider to help make 2021 a healthy and prosperous year.

Create a realistic plan

Sometimes our ambitions are too big to accomplish. Having little successes and building on those tends to be a more rewarding formula than aiming too high and feeling like it is too hard to succeed. Start small. Enjoy each success. Then build on it slowly.

For example, taking a walk regularly is good for us. It isn’t very glamorous. Most people don’t buy outfits or equipment for walking. But it’s doable, and there are plenty of health benefits. The Mayo Clinic staff advises that regular walks improve mood, coordination, and balance for seniors. Likewise, the clinic points out that regular walking also stands to make bones and muscles stronger. Additionally, the clinic notes that regular walking can help “Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.”

If you’re worried about walking by yourself, ask your Visiting Angels caregiver to go with you or to drive you to an indoor track where you can enjoy a walk.  Once you have a good anchor exercise built into your routine, you can experiment with more. Start with some that are easy to maintain. Then get the support your need to commit to it.

Supply your ambition

To make healthy habits stick, we need moral and logistical support. This may include meeting with your doctor, therapist, or nutritionist. It is also likely to include securing the resources you need to succeed. That means healthy, fresh foods. When it comes to having a reliable way to get to your appointments and secure the help you need to keep a healthy food supply on-hand, your Visiting Angels caregiver has you covered. We customize care to meet your needs.

For some clients, that means Alzheimer’s and dementia care. For others, that means services that are more geared towards wellness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We’ve got you covered, with personalized, compassionate care whatever your needs may be.

Find your community

The pandemic is still driving much of our social lives, but we will rediscover our social lives as the vaccine rollout continues. Until then, Visiting Angels Social Care is a great way to connect with others who are working to make their lives healthier. It’s hard to further a health initiative on your own. Having a community with which to discuss your challenges and success can make all the difference.

Social Care gives you the chance to learn some tech basics like shopping online, using a cell phone, and connecting on social media. It allows you to work with a Visiting Angels pro. Go at your own speed. It’s a great way to find your community of fellow health enthusiasts. Plus, your kids and grandkids will be so impressed!

Be kind to yourself

We make healthy habits stick by being honest with ourselves about our limitations and hang-ups. The pandemic has been sad, long, and lonely. It’s been a stressful time in America. But Americans are strong people. We are a community, and though we’ve been through a time of challenge, we will soon get to be together again. The days are getting longer. The COVID-19 vaccine is becoming increasingly available.

We will emerge from our time of isolation. We will mourn our losses, and we will move forward together. We need our seniors. You give us perspective and hope by reminding us of where our country has been and what we’re capable of. Take care of your precious self in 2021.
