Summer Activities Seniors Should Try

Summer Activities Seniors Should Try

We spent so much time indoors last year. Many of us are itching to get outside. So, if you're looking for some ways to enjoy time outdoors, here are a few summer activities for seniors to try.

Fishing

Fishing is a relaxing activity for the whole family to enjoy. If you're new to fishing, you can make an entire day of it. Start by visiting a local bait shop for a fishing pool and bait. Next, you'll want to scout out a peaceful spot along a river or lake. Some great options near Jasper include Joe Wheeler State Park and Tishomingo State Park. Once you've got your location, head over and enjoy some time in the outdoors. Don't forget to pack a lunch and drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated.

Picnic

We all have to eat, so why not enjoy the weather while we do so. You can plan an outdoor meal with friends and family to enjoy in a local park, or you can set up a picnic for one in your yard. You can keep your picnic simple with light snacks such as fruit and crackers, or you can cook up a cookout-style spread with grilled meat and pasta salads. If you're not into cooking, you can also order takeout from your favorite restaurant and enjoy the meal in the sunshine.

Gardening

If you want to find something fun to do in your backyard, try gardening. Even if you don't have a large yard with lots of grass or soil, you can start a patio garden. Patio gardens are when you put plants in pots instead of directly in the ground. They are an excellent option for those living in apartments or living facilities where you don't have your own private outdoor space.

Once you've determined where your garden will be, you'll want to decide what to plant in your garden. For example, you can do a vegetable or fruit garden and grow your fresh produce. Or you can do a flower garden if you want to create visually appealing scenery. You can also try a herb garden if you're going to grow your spices.

Hiking

When some people picture hiking, they imagine climbing tall mountains and jumping over creeks, but not all hikes have to be that intense. Hiking is walking through a scenic area, and you can find many mild hikes with little to no elevation. Some easy hikes near Jasper, Alabama, include the Clear Creek Recreation Raven Trail in the William B. Bankhead National Forest and the Blackwater Creek Blueway.

When hiking, make sure to wear light, breathable layers, and comfortable shoes with good ankle support. Also, be sure to fuel your body with a nutritious meal before your hike and bring lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. Most importantly, it's best practice to always hike with a friend, family member, or caregiver. No matter your age or hiking ability, accidents can happen, and having a companion ensures someone can call for help in an emergency.

Berry Picking

Many local farms allow the public to visit and pick berries, and it's a fun way to spend time outside while also getting some mild exercise. It's also a great activity to enjoy with your family. Plus, once you pick your berries, you can take them home to make jelly, jam, or enjoy fresh on their own. Not sure where to harvest your berries. Check out this list of farms to find a berry-picking location near you!
