Which Dogs Are Best for Older Adults

Dogs are considered man’s best friend for a reason. They’re like a built-in partner for daily adventures, whether you’re exploring your neighborhood or watching your new favorite television show from the comfort of your couch. As wonderful as dogs are, deciding to bring a canine into your life is a big one, and finding the right dog is essential.

Benefits of dogs for older adults

Having a dog requires a lot of responsibility, but it also has endless benefits, especially for older adults.

  • Dogs provide companionship. When you grow older, finding time to socialize with friends and family can become more of a challenge. Dogs are a great source of companionship during those moments when you may not have loved ones around.
  • Dogs give you a reason to walk every day. We know how essential physical activity is to maintain a healthy body and mind, but finding the motivation to move your body daily is challenging. Dogs require daily walks to use the bathroom and stimulate their brains. Knowing you have to walk your dog makes it easier to convince yourself to get outside.
  • Dogs can give you a sense of purpose. It’s common for older adults to go through a period of feeling without a purpose. Dogs rely on their owners to care for them, and having something to take care of daily can help fill your days with meaning.
  • Owning a dog can help you find a routine. Dogs thrive on routines. People also tend to flourish on routines, often experiencing less stress and anxiety with a set schedule. Owning a dog can help keep you accountable and build stability into your days.

What to consider when adopting a dog

Deciding to adopt a dog is a big responsibility. Before you head into a shelter (Jasper Humane Society or Walker County Humane Society are great options) and fall in love with the first face you see, consider what would make your ideal canine companion.

Size

The size of the dog is vital for two main reasons. First, you want to ensure you have the physical space for the dog in your home. Can the dog move about freely and comfortably if you live in an apartment? Does it have room to play and stretch out? If you live in an apartment, you also want to ensure the dog’s size fits within the allowed weight limit. Two, you don’t want to adopt a dog that is physically stronger than you. It’s best to find a dog you can lift if you need to carry or move it.

Activity level

Most dogs require some exercise to keep them happy and healthy, but not every dog enjoys long walks or endless hours of play. Be honest about how much time or energy you have to help your dog exercise. Can you commit to hour-long walks? Do you have a yard where they release their energy? Do you enjoy being outdoors, playing fetch or frisbee?

Grooming

Some breeds need weekly baths and brushings, while others can get by with little grooming. Some people enjoy brushing and grooming their dogs or have a nearby groomer they can take their pets to. If you don’t think you’ll want a high-maintenance dog, look for something with shorter hair that doesn’t shed.

Age

Puppies younger than one-year-old are adorable, but they take significantly more work to care for than older dogs. You need to potty train puppies, teach them obedience, and keep up with their endless energy. Adult dogs between two and eight might still require training and attention but may have more independence than a puppy. Senior dogs are usually a great option because their energy levels are low, and they tend to have more loving and calm personalities that fit more with the average senior adult’s lifestyle.

Personality

Dogs have personalities just like people, and it’s vital to find a dog with a character that meshes well with yours. If you’re more of a quiet person who prefers a calm night alone, find a dog that isn’t prone to barking and likes curling up on the couch with you. If you’re a social person who invites people over or wants to engage their dog in outings, look for a dog that is receptive to strangers and physical contact.
