Five New Things to Try this Fall

Happy autumn! Autumn is always a delicious season with sweet, spicy recipes, bountiful harvests, and festive holidays. It’s a cozy season, a time to prepare mentally and physically for the chilly fall and winter months. A new season always ushers in opportunities for new activities and experiences. How are you going to make this autumn your own?

Consider these five new things to try this fall.

Take on a new offering at your local library Granddaughter with grandmother

Local libraries have gone above and beyond to give patrons a robust educational experience during the pandemic. Take advantage of all that they’ve made possible. There’s some outstanding activities at your local library, including a stand-out monthly book club meeting led by local experts. If it’s not advisable for you to be out among other book clubbers, ask your Visiting Angel Caregiver to take you by the library when it stands to be less crowded. That way, you can peruse the shelves and stock up. You can also do curbside pickup if you don’t feel comfortable making your selections in a public setting.

Another fun offering, the library offers an online event called Drop box, where a staff member will talk about exciting and important reads. It’s a great way to keep your reading list fresh and to learn from the experts.

Another great offering at your local library is a robust collection of local historical materials. Dive in and learn all you can this fall!

Rekindle a family tradition

There’s nothing like freshly baked bread, pies and cookies when the weather turns chilly and the holidays are just around the corner. Start auditioning your holiday recipes now. Resurrect your grandma’s apple pie recipe; if you want to perfect it in time for Thanksgiving, you’ll probably want to start practicing now.

Artisanship is all the rage, and that means freshly baked breads. If you have an old recipe to hunt down, this is a great year to serve it or send it to your family members. Nothing warms a home like the smell of fresh bread.

If your family doesn’t have any baked goods that are traditionally served at the holidays, make this the year you start one. Get to work on cinnamon rolls, sugar cookies or whatever comes easily to you. It’s a great way to embrace the season.

Trace your family history

Dig out those old notes, post cards, clipping, maps and letters and start working on your family history. It’s a beautiful holiday gift for your family and an exceedingly interesting project. The library has some resources that can help; library staff teach a genealogy workshop that has been temporary canceled due to the pandemic. But your local librarians have the expertise to assist with your research and can likely help point you in the right direction as you work. There’s also plenty of online resources to aid your research.

It’s a good time to hunker down with a research project and your family members will be excited to learn about what you’ve found!

Meditation

There’s a lot of buzz around the health benefits of meditation. It can be a lot like prayer, a way of finding internal silence by focusing just on your breath. While prayer is a conversation, meditation is just like opening the windows and letting the air of your breath blow through yourself. It lets out the fears, worries and frustrations that collect inside of us and it brings in the fresh air.

Meditation can also involve just being mindful and being aware of what you’re experiencing. The older adults in this video, are practicing mindfulness when eating a piece of chocolate. It slows you down and connects you to that experience in a powerful way.

Connection

As the cold weather sets in, it’s a good time to get connected on social media. It can help you to stay in touch with your friends and family and to pursue activities through your local library, community center, YMCA, etc. The Visiting Angels Social Care gives you the basics, an overview, so that you can connect, shop and surf the web comfortably and with confidence. This service is provided by professionals who know how to work with seniors and can answer all your questions thoroughly and patiently.

Develop a new hobby, awareness or skill this fall, and you’ll be ready for the holiday season!
