Home Care Specialists Share Best Memory Exercises For Seniors

According to a study done by the National Institutes of Health, seniors who learned how to quilt or digital photography “had more memory improvement” than those who only socialized in their old age. But why is that? Home care specialists say it is because as you get older, your brain loses some of its ability to withstand neurological damage. But seniors who practice brain exercises focused on memory have a better chance of increasing their cognitive ability as they get older. If you or a loved one is getting older and concerned about losing some memory skills, try some of these memory exercises that are proven to help increase brain power in seniors.

Pick up a new instrument

If you’ve gone this far in life without learning how to play an instrument, consider trying it out. Studies have shown that learning a new instrument over a long period of time helps the brain with memory function because of the complexity. If you aren’t the type of person who is musically inclined, consider taking lessons from someone who has experience teaching new instruments to senior citizens.

But aren’t sports designed to make you physically healthy, not mentally? Not at all! Learning a new sport, such as yoga or golf, can help your brain improve cognitive abilities due to the amount of thinking and strategizing you need to do. Home care specialists agree that picking out a sport that utilizes both the mind and body will have positive effects in the long-term, as far as memory goes.

Card games

In addition to providing much-needed socialization, the American Academy of Neurology says that card games such as Hearts and Solitaire can improve cognitive abilities in seniors. In addition to having fun with your social group, playing cards can actually reduce your chances of memory loss later in life.

Reading

It might seem obvious, but home care specialists say reading is one of the best things you can do to keep your brain’s cognitive abilities as sharp as possible. Reading helps your brain practice word recall and can help prevent memory loss in seniors. If you or a someone you love isn’t a big fan of reading books, suggest fun magazines, comics or newspapers that are a little less boring to read. These forms of reading still boost brain power!

Cooking

Whether you or a loved one have cooking skills already or not, home care specialists agree that learning how to cook a new recipe helps your brain in many different ways. When you cook, you’re using nearly all of your senses (touch, smell, taste) which is a great way to boost brain power. And if we’re being honest, it’s a pretty tasty way to prevent memory loss!
