Mobility Exercises for Seniors

Mobility Exercises for Seniors

It’s natural for some movements to become harder or more tiring as we get older. But growing older doesn’t automatically mean we have to sacrifice our mobility. By keeping your body active and focusing on exercises that target certain joints and muscles, you can significantly improve your mobility, balance, and overall physical health.

Mobility Exercises to Try

If you want to improve or maintain your mobility, try some of the exercises below. Remember, never push your body to discomfort and always talk to your doctor before starting any new physical activity.

Quad Stretches

Stand beside a tall chair or counter. Using the chair or counter as stability, slowly lift one leg behind you and grab your toes of the lifted leg with the same side hand. You should now be standing on one leg with your knee pointed toward the ground. You should feel a light stretch in your quad. Hold the position for 10 seconds and try the exercise on the other leg.

Seated Back Rotations

Sit on a sturdy chair or bench with your feet firmly on the ground. With a straight back, place your hands on either side of you. Next, take your left hand, put it on your right knee, and slowly rotate your torso to the right. Hold the turned position for 10 seconds, then try the same thing on the other side by placing your right hand on your left knee and rotating your torso.

Shoulder Rotations

Standing straight with your arms resting at your sides, bring your shoulders up to your ears and push them back. Continue this motion slowly. You should feel a stretch in your upper back and chest. Complete ten backward rotations, then move your shoulders up and forward. Complete the forward motion ten times.

Overhead Side Stretch

Stand straight with your left hand on your waist. Reach your right hand up and over your head, giving yourself a slight bend in the torso. Reach as far over to one side as you comfortably can and hold for 10 seconds. Try the same stretch on the opposite side, reaching your left hand up and over your head.

Standing Mountain Climber

Stand up straight with your feet hip-width apart and your arms resting at your sides. Lift your left arm in the air. Keep it straight with your palm facing in front of you. With your arm in the arm, slowly lift your right knee to bring your foot off the ground. Your goal is to bring your knee as high up as you can without any discomfort. Hold this pose for 2 seconds, then bring your leg to the ground and your arm back to your side. Repeat with the other hand and knee.

Seated Leg Lifts

Start by sitting on a stable chair or bench. Place your hands on either side of the chair or beside your hips for stability. Next, slowly lift your left leg at the knee. Your goal is to get your leg to form a straight line, but don’t force it if you’re feeling any pain or discomfort. Slowly lower your leg back to the ground. Repeat this motion ten times, then do the same thing with your right leg. If you want to improve your balance, you can try this exercise on a stability ball.
