Preventing Elderly Heat Stroke This Summer

Even though spring was late this year, the heat has definitely started!  After being inside all winter, many seniors are excited to be outside celebrating the sun and spring beauty.  However, with temperatures reaching into the upper 90's last weekend, it is good to be reminded of the different ways we can help prevent our loved ones from experiencing heat stroke this summer while still enjoying the outdoors.

Tip #1: Drink lots of fluids!
Water, iced-tea, even Popsicles can be a refreshing way to beat the heat. Encourage your loved one to stay hydrated!

Tip #2: Wear appropriate clothing!

Encourage your loved one to wear light colors, light weight, and loose fitting clothes this summer.  And don't forget a hat!

Tip #3: Stay indoors!
Heat is at its fieriest around mid-day so it is wise to stay inside during that time (preferably in an air conditioned space).

Tip #4: Take it easy!

When it gets too hot, avoid outdoor exercise and any strenuous activity.  Perhaps encourage and help your loved one to work in the garden during the early evening hours in order to avoid working in the extreme heat.
