Celebrating National Senior Citizens Day in McKinney, TX

Here are some fun local activities you and your loved ones can enjoy on National Senior Citizens Day in McKinney, Plano, Frisco, Allen and surrounding communities in Collin County, TX

At Visiting Angels McKinney, our mission from day one has been to empower seniors throughout Collin County by helping them maintain their dignity and independence as they age with quality in-home elder care services. Keeping our purpose in mind, it comes as no surprise that one of our favorite holidays is National Senior Citizens Day, celebrated on August 21st.

While we do indeed celebrate older adults every single day of the year, we still believe it is important that there is a national holiday that recognizes our country's senior population.

A Holiday that Matters

National Senior Citizens Day is not as well-known as Mother's Day or Father's Day, but it is just as important. Established just shy over 30 years ago, this holiday gives all of us a chance to honor our elders. In 1988, Ronald Reagan made a presidential proclamation, signing the holiday into law:

"For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute."

For our elder care agency, these words are still true and will continue to be forever. President Reagan also said that we should do whatever we can to "[make] sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older."

Celebrating the Holiday with Your Loved One

If you wish to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day – and we think you definitely should – the best way to do it is to spend quality time with your senior loved ones. It is good to know that a lot of restaurants offer discounts and promotions for seniors on this holiday, so you can take your loved one out to eat at local establishments like Hank's Texas Grill in McKinney or Lockhart Smokehouse in Plano.

Since it's August, why not spend some time outside? You and your loved ones could go to the Towne Lake Recreation Area and go fishing or have a nice picnic. If your loved one owns a dog or two, Bonnie Wenk Park has a dog park so you, your loved ones and their furry companions can spend quality time together.

On the other hand, you do not have to go out to have a fun time. Some seniors may prefer to stay at home and have a good talk with their nearest and dearest. Plus, even if you do not go anywhere, you can still prepare your loved one a meal, bring them a present or join them as they play games or watch TV. What matters the most is that you spend the day together and have some fun.
