The Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care

The Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care

As you age, one of the many aspects to consider is the type of care you’ll need throughout different stages. There are many care options, from home care to assisted living, but one kind of care people often overlook is palliative care. Many misunderstand palliative care, thinking it’s the same as hospice, but it’s a vital option for those with chronic health conditions.

Hospice Care vs. Palliative Care

Hospice and palliative care are specialized options for individuals with severe and often life-threatening illnesses. Both care types aim to keep individuals physically comfortable and emotionally uplifted. Depending on the care team, a caregiver may help with personal grooming, showering, toileting, mobility, medication reminders, and meal preparations. Some teams may also include a nurse to assist with medical tasks like medication administration and bandage changes.

While hospice and palliative care are similar, the two have minor differences.

What is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is for individuals entering the final stages of life. Hospice aims to ease physical and mental discomfort so individuals can pass more peacefully. People may request hospice care when they have a life-threatening illness and no longer wish to receive medical treatment to cure their condition.

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is for anyone with a severe illness that needs physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual support. Many doctors will suggest palliative care to older adults after diagnosing a life-threatening condition like heart failure, cancer, or various forms of dementia. An individual can request palliative care regardless of their life expectancy. People in palliative care may also still receive treatment for their diagnosis.

Which Care Do I Need?

The primary difference between palliative and hospice care is whether you want to treat your underlying illness. If you have a condition you want to continue treating, then palliative care is the right option for you. If you’ve exhausted your treatment options and want to focus on your remaining quality of life, you’ll be a better candidate for hospice care.

No matter which you choose, if, at any point, you want to receive a different type of care, you can ask to switch your care. Neither palliative or hospice care means you’re giving up, and it’s okay to change your mind throughout care.
