Working as a Visiting Angels Professional Caregiver

More seniors choose to age in place each year instead of residing in an assisted living facility or care home. Individuals wish to stay in an area of familiarity and continue living in a home they’ve built over the years. While it makes sense why so many older adults are aging in place, maintaining one’s independence with age does come with its challenges. That’s where Visiting Angels caregivers come into play.

What is a Visiting Angels Caregiver

Visiting Angels caregivers are professional caregivers who provide at-home care services to seniors in the community to allow them to safely and comfortably age in place. Caregivers can work full-time or part-time hours with a flexible schedule that works best for them and their clients. As a Visiting Angels caregiver, you may help senior clients with various non-medical tasks such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, personal grooming, medication reminders, transportation, mobility assistance, and more.

In addition to helping seniors around the house, caregivers also provide companionship and support to clients. Some seniors who hire caregivers don’t require physical assistance but need more healthy relationships in their life. As a caregiver, you may spend your days taking walks, reading, playing games, completing puzzles, watching movies, discussing hobbies, or cooking alongside your client.

Qualities of a Successful Visiting Angels Caregiver

You don’t need to have professional caregiving experience to start your caregiving career. At Visiting Angels, we train our caregivers to ensure they’re capable of providing the best care to their clients. However, we look for personality traits and qualities when interviewing potential candidates that we tend to see across all our caregivers.

  • Compassion- As a compassionate individual, you should feel comfortable helping clients through tough times. Compassion is also about having strong emotional intelligence and knowing the best way to approach a complicated situation while ensuring your client is safe and comfortable.
  • Empathy- Caregiving comes with some challenging moments, especially when working with clients with chronic conditions who may need an extra level of care. When days get hard, it’s essential to practice empathy toward your client and understand they may be experiencing something and unintentionally expressing unwanted emotions toward you.
  • Self-Motivated- Most caregivers work alone with the client meaning there won’t be someone micromanaging your work. Therefore, we need self-motivated caregivers to complete tasks and anticipate the needs of their clients. Caregivers should take the initiative to get something done instead of waiting for someone to tell them what to do.
  • Supportive- Aging can be a complicated process for some individuals, and as a caregiver, you want to support your clients through their challenges. Keep a positive attitude and do your best to help clients navigate aging.
  • Kind- As a caregiver, you will work with and interact with all sorts of people, and it’s important to approach everyone with kindness and respect.
