Ways to Make Nutrition Fun for Your Senior

A healthy diet with lots of nutrients and vitamins is extremely important for an older adult. Not to mention the importance of making sure they drink enough water and stay hydrated. As we age it can be difficult to change our diets and we can lose the ability to be able to determine if we are thirsty. Because of the changes in our bodies as we age here are a few tips for making nutrition an enjoyable part of a senior’s life.

Ask for Their Preferences and Input

A great place to start with nutrition and meal planning for an older adult, if you are a family caregiver or a professional caregiver, is to empower them. I don’t know a single person who likes being told what to do, even if it’s something that is good for them. The same holds true for a senior. Instead of telling them what they should eat or what’s good for them; try asking their preferences and their ideas for how to improve their weekly meals. Make suggestions but be sure to listen and understand what he or she wants.

Include Them in the Prep

Along with asking their preferences, if you’re aging loved one is able, you can also include them in preparing the healthy meals you planned together. Encourage them to toss a salad, butter bread, or stir a soup. It can be difficult being told all the things you can no longer do, so change the attitude and point Adult daughter having tea with elderly mother out the things they can do. This is a small way to empower them and help maintain their independence.

Eat Meals with Them

A great way to make mealtime enjoyable and to encourage an older adult to eat is to eat with them. This simple step can completely change mealtime for a senior. Eating together can promote great conversations, help the older adult to feel more comfortable and even encourage them to eat better. Making eating a social experience has many health benefits and it’s an easy way to enrich your aging loved one’s life.

Most family members want to be able to provide all the personal care and companionship their loved one needs but sometimes the demands of our own families and work can take away those opportunities.
