We joyously award Denise Moreau Angel of the Month for April 2019. Denise began working with Visiting Angels Newton/Canton in December of 2016. She was described as very well spoken, friendly, and confident in her abilities by the case managers that interviewed her.
Denise was born in Haiti and came to the United States when she was 19 to attend school in New Jersey. She moved to Florida, married and had a daughter and twin boys. After 12 years, Denise and her husband divorced, and a friend recommended she and her children move to Massachusetts for a fresh start. Denise completed an English learning program, general college courses and began an LPN program through the years but being a dedicated single mother was always her priority. Her daughter is now pursuing her Masters in Health & Science, and her sons are in college earning degrees in Physical Therapy and Exercise Science. Both sons are playing basketball for their universities. Denise can now shift her focus back to higher learning and is registered to continue LPN classes this Fall.
Denise decided to become a home caregiver after she was unable to get back to Haiti to care for her mother before she passed. She felt great sadness and realized she wanted to help others. She researched and completed CNA and HHA courses and began working for a variety of home care agencies before coming on board with Visiting Angels Newton/Canton. Denise learned a great deal about assisting people with dementia throughout the years and uses those skills in a variety of ways. She explained that she has always had an optimistic outlook and has taken difficult situations and found ways to work through them with a positive attitude. She says that she has learned through caring for others to accept people for who they are – “You cannot change someone and their behavior, but learn to adapt and support to the best of your ability.”
