Starting Your Career with Visiting Angels

Home care is not new, but the rise in-home care services saw a spike during the 2020 global pandemic. More and more seniors opted to receive care at home instead of visiting populated hospitals and assisted living communities. Not only are aging adults turning to home care, but one survey from Home Health Care News found that 97 percent of health plan executives value in-home health and find treating seniors at home more cost-effective. Combined with the aging Baby Boomer population, these two factors make in-home caregiving a viable career for compassionate individuals looking for rewarding work within a reliable industry.

What is Home Care?

Home care is when a professional caregiver provides nonmedical services for seniors at their homes. Many seniors seeking home care want part-time assistance with household duties such as laundry, dusting, dishes, and vacuuming. Others enjoy the companionship or like help with basic technology such as setting up a Netflix account, working their smartphone, or sending an email. You may even encounter a client who can no longer drive, doesn’t have access to public transportation, and needs help running errands or getting to doctor’s appointments. Clients who need assistance with these basic daily tasks receive our companion care services.

Some clients need more hands-on care, and these seniors often request our personal care services. As a caregiver providing personal care, a client may need the same services as companion care, but with the addition of more personal care. This care can include personal grooming, toileting, showering, dressing, and mobility assistance.

Visiting Angels also provides specialized care such as end-of-life care, transition care, and dementia care. Suppose you’re a caregiver providing end-of-life care. In that case, you typically work with a hospice team to provide comfort and relieve symptoms so seniors can comfortably enter the final stage of life. Transition care is helping a senior transition back home after hospitalization (typically after surgery) to reduce the risk of rehospitalization. For dementia care, caregivers receive specialized training to work with patients living with dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease.

It’s vital to note that personal care is not the same as nursing care or CNA care. The role of a caregiver is not to treat or provide medical assistance to clients. A professional caregiver does not help with medical tasks such as changing bandages or administering medications. At-home care services allow seniors to feel comfortable and safe living independently at home.
