Four New Hobbies Seniors Should Try This Winter

Four New Hobbies Seniors Should Try This Winter

January is National Hobby Month. It’s the perfect time of year for seniors to explore new hobbies that will keep them busy well into the spring season. Carving out time to participate in a new hobby offers many health benefits to seniors. Learning a new hobby can reduce a senior’s risk for dementia, boost brain power, extend longevity, and increase overall life satisfaction.

If you’re a senior who is in a rut regarding hobbies, here are four new hobbies you should consider trying this winter.

Pickleball

The sport of pickleball has gained momentum over the last couple of years. Combining aspects of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, it truly is a fun sport that can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels. Stay active this winter by exploring the world of pickleball. The Oshkosh YMCA Tennis & Pickleball Center offers eight indoor pickleball courts. You can sign up for lessons or meet a friend to play together.

Model Crafts

Studies show that engaging in arts and crafts can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in seniors. It can also slow cognitive decline and improve physical health. Engage in the craft of building a model aircraft or boat this winter. Constructing a model from scratch requires great concentration and dexterity. It also provides an outlet for creativity as you choose colors to paint your finished project. Visit HobbyTown to purchase a kit or select pieces to build your model this winter.

Go Birding

Birdwatching offers an array of mental benefits, including reduced stress, anger, depression, and anxiety. Active birdwatchers enjoy physical benefits as well, such as improved endurance and balance as they hike around different terrains. If you’ve never gone birding, you’re in luck. Oshkosh happens to be a well-known Bird City of Wisconsin. Explore local nature preserves, such as the Sheldon Nature Area or the Sawyer Creek Nature Preserve. Take a stroll along the Oshkosh Riverwalk and look for birds. Visit Winnebago Audubon for information about upcoming birding events.

Podcasts

Another new hobby seniors should try this winter is listening to podcasts. Podcasts come in a variety of formats and are a series of episodes. There are endless topics of podcasts, including culture, education, news, health, and true crime. They can be a great way for seniors to stay informed about current events or stay in the know about healthcare, finances, and more. Follow this guide if you’re new to podcasts. Then, check out Oshkosh podcasts for a list of local shows you may want to follow.
