TRANSITIONING TO TRANSPORT CARE

Transitioning to transportation ServicesCan your frail, older loved one get in and out of a vehicle on their own, as well as negotiate the elevator, hallway, and waiting room in the doctor’s office alone? When Taxis and Uber aren’t enough anymore, it may be time to transition to “Transport Care.”  Many older folks require sensitive, skilled or specially certified drivers who know how to deal with someone who’s frail, uses a wheelchair, needs oxygen or has mild cognitive problems. Often a doctor visit involves more than a pick-up and drop-off. What if the doctor is running behind schedule and the visit now entails a bathroom break and a need for hydration, even a snack or dose of medication????

The New York Times recently reported that 30% of patients skip their physician appointments due to transportation issues. That missed appointment may wind up costing your loved one an exacerbated condition or undiagnosed illness that is now untreated. The elderly aren’t the only ones in need of transportation to a medical appointment: cancer patients, post-surgical patients,  those who have macular degeneration, and physical therapy patients may all need help.

Take into account that many friends and family members work during the day or live far away, and often are not available to provide a lift or regular transportation – let alone remain with you at the doctor’s office if the visit should be lengthy. This further complicates matters. Fortunately, transportation is one of the services Visiting Angels of the Palm Beaches can provide to you or your loved one.

"My 90 year old mother fell and broke her arm a year ago and was in real need of home care. Knowing the great reputation of Visiting Angels, I called them after checking their recent(wonderful) reviews. This gave me the confidence to start services. We had to do 24 hour care for many months as mom couldn’t do much for herself. Our experience has been very positive, the caregivers have been competent and caring. Honorable mention needs to go to our care coordinator Jackie who has always been willing and able to meet requests, listen attentively to mom’s changing needs and make any adjustments in hours and staffing! I am out of state and knowing that my mother’s needs are met for safety and compassionate quality care is priceless!"
