WHAT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME TO TAKE THE CAR KEYS AWAY?
What time is the right time to talk to Mom or Dad (or your spouse) about giving up the car keys? Look for these warning signs that driving has become hazardous:
1. Forgetting the destination driving to or how to get home;
2. Failing to observe traffic signs and stoplights;
3. Delayed reaction time, confusion;
4. Driving at an inappropriate speed;
5. Poor lane control;
6. Errors at intersections;
7. Confusing the brake and gas pedals;
8. Hitting curbs, trouble parking;
9. Returning from a routine errand later than normal; and
10. Becoming exceptionally cross or irritated while driving
Diminished vision, slowed reflexes, and impaired judgement make driving hazardous. But just because you or a loved one can no longer drive, it doesn’t have to mean not getting to where you need to go!
Remind your loved one that when the time comes to give up the car keys, they don’t necessarily have to give up their independence as well. Be sure they know there are alternative services like Palm Tran or Uber, if friends or family are not able to drive them. Often places of worship can arrange transportation to weekly services. Supermarkets now deliver most necessary items as well. If they are still resistant, get the family doctor involved as a neutral third party – he or she can discuss the medical reasons driving is dangerous, and in most cases your parent will accept the doctor’s guidance.
For your peace of mind, consider a home care agency like Visiting Angels to drive a loved one to doctor appointments, to run errands, to go shopping, or to see friends. Companion care services are available 24/7/365, on an hourly basis, as much or as little as needed for help at home or getting around town. We can drive your car, or our CNAs and HHAs can drive your loved one in their vehicle.
